Pueblo Alto Mural
2022 - 2023
About
This initiative I led for the City of Chandler brought together a range of project stakeholders including residents of Pueblo Alto, a predominantly Mexican American and Yaqui neighborhood in Chandler; local artist Edgar 8ahau Fernandez; local historic business owner Leon Espinoza (Espo’s Mexican Food); and Chandler’s Arts Commission, Neighborhood Advisory Committee, and Human Relations Commission to create a participatory mural that uplifts the culture and history of Pueblo Alto.
Purpose-Oriented
This project was developed with the purpose of co-creating an art project with Pueblo Alto neighborhood residents and forming relationships between residents and City staff. These intentions served as the north star for guiding the development of this project.
Community-Engaged
This project was rooted in the idea that residents of the Pueblo Alto/Hightown neighborhood are experts in their community. I implemented a design process that included many more community engagement opportunities than is typical and ensured that residents’ voices were prioritized at every step of the way.
Values-Driven
This project required a values-driven approach towards consensus-building among multiple stakeholders and innovation on municipal public art processes that are not built for community engagement.
